Examinations should not
scare you. As the name implies, it is a
means of determining how much of a subject matter you have correctly learnt and
mastered. The following tips would help you prepare adequately for any
examination.
1 Know the scheme of work
For
every examination, there is always a scope or scheme of work. This would enable
you know when you have not studied all that is required of you to know. Most
examining bodies give soft of hard copies of their scheme of work. Your duty is
to lay hold on the scheme of work for the examination you are going to write.
2 Study, Study, Study
It
is never enough to just know the contents of the scheme of work for the
examination you are about to sit for. Take out the recommended textbooks and
other learning aids. Do what you should do with them, study! Do not stop studying
until you have covered every area listed in the scheme of work. Make it a must
that you do not relax until you have studied all aspects of the scheme of work
for that examination.
3 Past Questions
Examining
bodies have set series of examinations in the past. It is a matter of necessity
that you get your hands on as many past questions as possible. Take time out to
solve each of them till you get them right. It will boost your confidence a
great deal to know that you have solved some sample questions that you are
likely to meet on the day of the examination.
4 Never Assume, Be Sure
There
are many things you have to be sure of before the day of the examination. You
must be sure you can solve the amount of questions that you will be given
before the time to attempt them elapses. This means you have to simulate the
examination situation before the actual date of the examination and be extra
sure that you would not be under undue stress on the true day of the
examination as a result of poor preparations in terms of simulating the examination
condition beforehand. You must also be sure that you can correctly answer all
the questions you encountered while studying. You must not pass over problems
that you cannot solve on your own during your preparations for examination. You
must make sincere efforts to get the correct solutions to all grey areas of
study before the day of the examination. It will definitely be disastrous on
the day of examination if you assume you are prepared and are not sure of it.
5 Spend in Cash and in Kind
There
will be lots of expenses and sacrifices to make when preparing for an
examination. If you must create extra time to guarantee adequate preparation
for an examination, please do it. Textbooks and teaching aids, tutorials and
class activities, individual and group projects, the list can go on. Do not
ignore any of the things you are expected to do in preparing for the
examination even if they are very inconvenient.
6 Practice, Practice, Practice
If
it is possible, make it a daily routine to ensure that you do some studying for
at least two hours every day. At some point it will be very evident that you
are prepared for the examination and at other times it will seem like you are
ill-prepared. The only thing that can guarantee that your confidence would not
fail you on the day of the examination is practice. Keep on solving problems,
mastering concepts and definitions. Simulate examination conditions over and
over again till the day of the actual examination.
7 Give All the Help You Can
Never monopolize your
knowledge. Share it with others who have difficulty comprehending the topics
taught in class. Always be excited to grab any opportunity to make others
better prepared for an examination, by offering to tutor them and provide
answers to any tough question they might encounter in the course of studying. Provide
all the help you can to help others ace an examination. It will boost your confidence
and make you better prepared for the same examination
