Rules of Class Attendance

RULES OF CLASS ATTENDANCE

Throughout the world people congregate at various places to be taught by sages, professors, facilitators, and mentors. The wide range of things that can be learnt fuel the growth and proliferation of people meeting to share ideas and learn. The only way that such gathering can achieve the purpose for which it was created is to obey and strictly follow some certain laid down rules. As the society becomes more and more sophisticated, the need for rules and regulations would keep coming to the fore and for a congregation of people to be taught and learn, rules must be obeyed to get maximum benefit from such gatherings. Classes throughout the world have their unique format, settings and aims but some rules as to its organization and running are quite universal.

The order must be upheld
All classes must be orderly. Students and teachers alike must endeavor to comport themselves like people who are on a mission to achieve something. The chairs or settings must never be disheveled, the way and manner in which the students and teacher settle in for the day’s learning journey must never be haphazard. A stranger entering into a class must know that of a truth, a class is in progress and not a circus or jamboree.

Noise is forbidden
There is no gainsaying the fact that noise has its unique function in terms of how it is used to know what has its unique function in terms of how it is used to know what is going on in a place. Many places in the world are known by the type of noise that emanate from them. A marketplace is known by the combined noises of people engaged in the art of trade. An electricity generating plant cannot but give off loud noises to prove that work is being done. But in a class, it is strictly forbidden to make noise or chatter. Students and teachers alike must never break this rule. Noise in classes cause disorientation and make learning difficult for both teachers and students. A class is known by the serenity that emanates from absolute silence.

One speaker at a time
In many climes, classes can have more than one teacher or facilitator. The growing number of students in each class necessitates the inclusion of more teachers for class control. This trend of having more than one teacher in a class cannot negate the need to ensure that, at any given time, only one person is speaking to the rest of the class. There must never be chorus answers to questions asked and teachers must conduct themselves with utmost dignity and respect for themselves and the class they teach. In a class, it is possible for one and only one person to talk at a time. This rule cannot be watered down if the best needs to be derived from congregating to learn.
All parties must do their duties

It is a total and complete waste of time and energy for people to gather together with the aim of achieving nothing. This is the case when the people, student and teachers alike do not do their respective duties to ensure that the learning process is well oiled and fruitful. Teachers must prepare adequately for each class and students must come with the readiness to learn and unlearn. Classes flourish and achieve greater results when the students are ardent readers, researchers and reviewers. Teachers that have prepared adequately for their classes find it easier to impart accurate and precise knowledge on students who do not leave all the work of knowledge transference to them. It is important to state at this junction that class attendance is for a purpose and that purpose has its roots in commitment of teachers and students to do their part diligently.

Attendance must be taken
Numbers and numbering have come to stay. It is so important that socialization and communal living would be difficult to achieve and control. In the setting of a class, all attendees must have a record that shows the number of people that should be in class and the number of people that are actually present. This rule ensures that tracking the progress of the class in terms of the percentage of students that have being able to go through all the learning stages is seamless. A class without an attendance register would end up having an unclear view of its true attendance and progress in the learning journey.

Notes, Assignments and Projects
It is a complete misnomer for anyone to attend class without taking notes or at the very least, have all the learning materials, tools and aids that make learning possible. Every class must have a systemic way of getting learning materials across to the students and dishing out assignments, projects and every other thing that is used to continually assess the progress of the students. It is also imperative that students do all assignments and projects assigned to them else, there will be no need to congregate for the purpose of learning at all. These notes, assignments and projects form the bedrock of true learning and practice.

Final Assessment must be given

True classes have a way of telling how well students have grasped the objectives of the class. The most common way of getting a feel of students’ competence and level of comprehension is to give assessment tests. These tests are usually either written or oral. A class must have a way of gauging the level of understanding that the students have about the subject matters the class addresses. This final assessment that may also be an examination must be given, else learning would become a thing of luck and chance with no means of knowing if the class has been able to achieve its aim of being a class in the first place.
