In Nigeria, the Federal Government, in coping with the ever increasing demands of its citizens and the nation, have in its great wisdom delegated responsibilities. This is achieved by sharing the burden of management among several ministries. These ministries, set up by the Federal Government, administer various areas of specialization and these include; agriculture, commerce, industry, power and steel, foreign affairs and a lot more. Among these numerous ministries, the role of the Ministry of Education in Nigeria is one that is priceless. Education is everything. It brings light to grey areas and gives a nation the manpower it needs. Education played a vital role in Nigeria’s struggle to gain independence from her colonial masters, it produced all the highly skilled professionals in Nigeria today and it is the catalyst that will project Nigeria into the future she dreams of.

The Ministry of Education is a body set up by the Federal Government to cater for the education needs of Nigeria by acting in the role and capacity of an administrator of education in Nigeria. As a ministry, it does not fall short of expectations. In carrying out its functions, the Ministry of Education employs and uses various tools and instruments among which are policy formulation, maintaining uniform standard and controlling the quality of education through supervision.

In formulating policies, the Ministry of Education consults various stakeholders in the education sector of Nigeria. One of the policies propagated and enforced by the Ministry of Education is the duration of time for each stage of education, starting at primary and on to tertiary level of education. These policies are formulated to standardize education in Nigeria. Education policies in Nigeria are not static; they change from time to time.

Data collected from the field – schools and individuals for example – are analyzed to get a clear understanding of what is actually going on in the educational sector. This will aid the Ministry of Education in drafting out a comprehensive and viable plan to take education to the next level in Nigeria. In Nigeria, there are lots of people who want to venture into education. The Ministry of Education through its branch offices ensures that the standard is never compromised for any reason. The Ministry of Education set the language, curriculum and minimum requirements to start school in Nigeria. A child going to a school in the north should receive at least the minimum standard in terms of learning requirements as the child in the south.

The Ministry of Education does not just open the doors to its offices at the headquarters at the start of every business day and close its doors at the end of each working day. There is a supervision office of the ministry whose sole job is to go to various places where learning is taking place to ensure that the quality of Education is never compromised. The supervising office has a lot of field officers in its employ that are sent out to explore the education terrain of Nigeria. These officers usually write reports and recommendations that are used in putting aright anything that is not right in the education sector and making improvements where necessary.

Education in Nigeria has very many aspects and a very intricate spectrum of levels and areas. The Ministry of Education is saddled with the responsibility of harmonizing these various aspects of education in Nigeria. Primary, secondary, tertiary and vocational studies in Nigeria have very many policies and processes. The Ministry of Education through the relevant offices ensures that there is harmony between these policies and processes so that administration, monitoring and controlling of education in Nigeria is not cumbersome, obstructed or made difficult.

Nigeria is not an island. It is a nation in the committee of nations and thus is not independent of other nations in the world. The world is ever evolving and becoming smaller and smaller as a result of various technological advancements that have been made possible through education. The Ministry of Education also has an office that handles education at the international level as it relates to Nigeria. Some kind of training may not be accessible in Nigeria but can be got in other nations. Nationals from other nations may want to come and learn in Nigeria and there may be need to exchange ideas, discuss standards, and harmonize education policies and processes across whole regions and even an entire continent. The Ministry of Education handles these issues through its relevant offices.

The Ministry of Education, as mountainous as it seems cannot work alone.
