Useful tips on answering examination questions

USEFUL TIPS ON ANSWERING EXAMINATION QUESTIONS
The proverbial midnight candle have been burnt, hours upon hours of poring over books accomplished, tutorials and all likely questions all attempted. Even grey areas have absorbed a healthy dose of illumination. Then the D-day arrives, the so called “day of reckoning” and all the effort and preparation undergo the Litmus test. The following elucidated points are useful tips on how to get the bearing and tactics right when answering examination questions.

DO NOT PANIC
Many examinations have the reputation of very low pass rate. It may not be the pass rate of an examination, it could be the sudden realization upon the seeing the questions that most of them seem strange. Whatever may be the reason for the panic and anxiety, take some deep breaths and relax. The body and brain working in unison deliver the best result when the nerves are calm. When confronted with a situation that causes panic before or after sighting the questions of an examination, take a short time to calm the nerves down. It is very important that calmness is maintained before and during the examination to achieve optimum result.

ALWAYS READ THE INSTRUCTIONS
Every examination has its instructions. To read every word and sentence that makes up the instructions of an examination is good ethics. Do not allow familiarity with an examination format to cloud the necessity of perusing the instructions guiding the way and manner in which answers are provided to the questions. This should be first thing that is done immediately after receiving the questions. Answering questions in a format that is different from what the examiner is expecting to see will lead to poor results. In some cases the instructions for an examination are given verbally. Stop all other things and pay close attention!

SKIM THROUGH THE QUESTIONS
It is good practice to glance through the questions given in an examination but not before the signal is given for the examination to begin in earnest. Skimming through the questions would warm up the brain and nervous system in readiness for what it is up against. A quick glance at majority if not all of the questions would enable the mind to process the questions’ difficulty level. The only exception to this rule is Aptitude tests where accuracy and speed are weighed. In other kinds of examination, “The Skimming Tip” can be applied.

DO NOT SPEND TOO MUCH TIME ON ONE QUESTION
This is a very crucial tip. It is normal to not be able to recall everything that has been read before an examination. It is also normal for some questions to be difficult to solve. Do not make the mistake of spending too much time trying to figure out how to answer difficult and troublesome problems in an examination. Allocate a little time for reasoning out possible ways to solve difficult problems in and examination and stick to it. If a problem becomes too stubborn to solve, move on to other questions.

ATTEMPT THE SIMPLEST QUESTIONS FIRST
If it is possible to skim through all the questions, it is very helpful to tick or note the questions that are easy to solve. At the end of the skimming journey, attempt simple questions first before moving on to more difficult questions. This tip saves time and gives the boost to face and tackle more difficult questions in an examination.

WRITE LEGIBLY, SHADE OR TICK PROPERLY
Nothing puts off an examiner like a barely readable writing. Computers and software that grade answers to objective questions, score only those questions that have answers ticked or shaded properly. For the purpose of examinations, ensure that answers to questions are given in a well arranged and neatly written form. Make sure that answers to objective questions are clear, concise and according to the format stated in the instruction given.

NEVER CHEAT
This is the code of examinations worldwide that must not be broken. Other shortcomings might be forgiven but this code, when broken can completely kill any hope of a pass in an examination. It does not matter how, where or when it happened. Once caught, there is no hope for a result. Do not cheat!
