Ten reasons why we study

Ten (10) Reasons Why We Study

To pass examinations
This is perhaps the most popular and well known reason for studying; no one wants to fail an examination and thus the need to study. To become familiar with the basic and advanced concepts in chosen areas of knowledge and competence, books, videos and audio recordings are pored over. The level of understanding is then tested by written and oral examinations. The volume of information one has to become familiar with before the day of the examination is enough reason to sit down and study. The alternative is the failure nobody wants.

To teach others
When a person get hooked while trying to explain something to others, what to say next and confusion about what has been said becomes the bone of contention. The listeners become uncomfortable and jittery. The atmosphere becomes charged with much over-awareness and anticipation. This scenario is a very familiar one. It is the result of not studying well about what one is to teach others about. When thorough study is done on a subject matter, the confidence and composure to teach others about what has been studied will always be present. Personal understanding and the imparting process of teaching is strengthened when studying is done.

To replicate what others are doing
There are many things that need to be shared for value to be added to living. If studying was not one of mankind’s abilities, it would have been extremely difficult to bring civilization to the world. People study other languages that are not their mother tongue; others study at various schools to become competent professionals in different areas of human endeavor. All these things are possible because of mankind’s ability to study. A job that is done so well by one can be done equally well by another because the job and its intricacies have been studied. There is virtually nothing that anyone can do that another cannot do after it has been studied.

To hone skills
It is always possible to leave good behind and go on to better. Studying is an avenue to achieve this. Amateurs are the product of a shallow understanding and blunt knowledge. Things beyond the introduction and basics are seldom taught in the real world. The best in every field and sphere of life knows this. The thirst to know more drives the mind to find avenues to amass and feed on knowledge through studying and thus a fine tuning of already acquired skill is achieved.

To answer questions
Questions demand answers and answers demand knowing. Studying helps to make us know and understand. Till date, many questions from every sphere of life are begging for answers. Many people are searching for answers to these questions by studying. Studying helps to unravel and get answers to deep and difficult questions.

To make improvements
The hallmark of development is improvement. This is especially true in our fast paced world where many things become obsolete in the smallest possible time. People do things that are worthy of commendation but with inherent limitations. Others make it a point of duty to take up these things and improve on them. To achieve this, intense study has to be done on already existing works and the thorough understanding acquired is then used to find better ways of achieving the goal of these works.

 To inform
Weather forecasts, Stock market prices, Business intelligence and Predictive analysis all aim to give information upon which informed decisions can be made. Some of these areas of human interest deal with life and death situations and the ability to bring the possibility of collateral damage to the barest minimum depend on how well the situation is understood. Undiluted and air tight studying of all the underlying factors that prompt the information upon which informed decisions has to be made must be done. In areas where there is no room for mistakes, the stakes are high and thus studying is taken very seriously.

To have things become second nature to us
It is very rare to find a Medical Doctor that has to incessantly make reference to textbooks to diagnose every ailment encountered. There are many things that can be known without thinking. Thorough studying has the potency of making things part of the subconscious, requiring no effort to do at all. All the basic and salient information needed to be able to tackle challenges in any sphere of life are usually most useful if they are at the finger tips.

To unleash the power of subconscious rumination
When a problem does not want to see itself solved, it can put undue stress on the mind trying to solve the problem. Most people get discouraged and give up any hope of finding solution. But there are others who would not give up. A few percentage of this latter group feed their subconscious mind with information concerning the problem they are trying to solve without any deliberate effort on their part. This stag of studying have led to mind-blowing discoveries, innovations and solutions. This is because even when the mind is not consciously studying, the subconscious part of the mind keeps chewing on the problem and looking for a way to solve it. Some shout “Yay!” and others simply smile when suddenly; their minds just stumble on the answer.

To get order out of chaos
The game of picture puzzle seeks to bring order and meaning out of a jumble of meaningless and disorderly picture parts. People who succeed tremendously at solving picture puzzles are those who take the time to continuously study the jumble of picture parts with each step they take towards making a meaning of it. Studying helps in getting an understanding of patterns, repetitions and behaviors in several phenomena. When something that beats the imagination keeps recurring, it can be solved by careful and patient studying. No one likes chaos. Everyone always wants to be in control and anything that threatens that desire can be curtailed through understanding garnered from studying.
This list is by no means exhaustive. The reasons why we study lend credence to the fact that we are higher beings in a never ending quest to know more.
