15 Axioms about Studying

Studying makes high grades
“Wow! Daniel cleared all his courses with distinctions”.  This sounds familiar right? All too often discussions about exceptional academic and professional performances pervade social interactions. A close look at the genesis of such extraordinary performance will reveal a habit of consistent, insistent and persistent studying. Do you want to have high grades? Do you want to become a celebrity of sorts in your academic or professional circle? Then, studying should be your personal assistant.

All study and no rest makes Burke a weird boy
A story about Isaac Newton has it that he works almost all day in the laboratory and forgets to eat, most especially his lunch. Another story about Burke working without playing tells that he became a dull boy. The body needs its rest so it can be refreshed to take on more work. Imagine someone with sunken eyes, weight loss, lowered immune system response to opportunistic infections and general weakness. It is weird, isn’t it? Even a hard worker like Thomas Edison would take short breaks thought his typical working day, occasionally placing his forehead on the desk and taking a nap.

Build understanding while the teacher teaches
“I can read it all on my own”. This statement sounds more like pride and haughtiness. Why spend six hours studying when four hours can be saved by attending classes and paying attention to teacher teaching.

No studying is an island
Textbooks all over the place, references, almanacs, dictionaries, thesauruses, encyclopedias and what have you. Subject matters would always have a history and a relationship with other subject matters. How can a word not understood while studying be left on its own without checking for its meaning? That is a bad habit. Every textual aid that the hands can lay hold on while studying should not be ignored but used to maximum effect. Do not forget the king of them all, the Library!

Examinations and tests waits for no man
The fact that there remains a lot to be covered when examination or test is just around the corner would neither make the questions nor the date for the assessment, change. The outlines and syllabuses for each subject matter is always spelt out clearly and long before the bell tolls for assessments. Take advantage of foreknowledge and get ready for the showdown!

Uneasy lays the head that has to study
Aptitude tests, Graduate Record Examination, Medical Boards and a host of other challenging examinations are a call to hours of study and without mincing words, it is not easy!

Procrastination is the thief of study time
Do not push it to another day. Take that book and study it now. Tomorrow is always a day away. The books would not fill the air of the study room with inviting aromas of a well prepared meal but would remain the way they have been for ages, lines upon lines of texts that have to be read through to gain anything from them. Get down to business, open those books study them and mine their gold, not tomorrow, today!

The journey to becoming a professional begins with an hour of study
Lofty dreams of what the future holds in terms of occupation and plans to contribute to the advancement of the human race in all spheres of life is inborn and bred from childhood into adulthood. An aeronautic engineer did not wake up as an engineer but went through all the process that has to be passed to become one. Seriously, at a time and around the start of the journey, the engineer studied for an hour.

Little drops of studying make a mighty genius
Studying is neither a manufacturing process nor a sales pitch. Studying is more like a calculated and sure action that aims at a real goal. Little wonder that it is never rushed but taken in steps and doses till the ultimate goal is achieved. While, studying, the mind is brought into a realm that has the capacity to create a genius.

An achieved dream was not built in a day
Thousands of hours of study is done to see a full-fledged mathematician, physicist and chemist. Do the math. A day cannot have a thousand hours; it has only twenty four hours. So, how many days would give a thousand hours and how many days would give thousands of hours? The picture is getting clearer, isn’t it?

The persistent studying student eats the fat of success
It does not matter how many times failure has been recorded; persistent studying would eventually deliver success. Do not get discouraged about the negative turnout of the result of an examination. Find out what went wrong, correct all errors and start studying again. It is inevitable; the fat of success would be eaten in the end.

He who stays all night becomes the best
It is not only about inherent gifts but also the effort put into getting the desired result from studying. People who go the extra mile usually outshine their peers. Do you want to graduate top of your class in the finals? Then go the extra mile that would put you in the lead

To start studying on time saves dreams
The books, texts and notes keep accumulating and nothing is done about them until two weeks to the date of examination. Many people have dealt their lofty dreams deadly blows as a result of this unassuming but potent habit. Sleeping, stress and disorientation are typical characteristics of failure to start studying on time. A chance at a scholarship could be killed by study overload. It does not take much; at least an hour everyday could save that dream.

By their studying you shall know them
A telescope is not needed. It is right under the nose. Their hands shoot up in class before the teacher has the chance to finish the question asked, they give eloquent speeches, they are inventors and regarded as geniuses, they get high grades in examinations, speak with astute intelligence, do very well professionally and are record breakers. These are the fruits of those who have imbibed the habit of studying. Can a pear tree bear mango fruits?

Show me your chair and table and I will tell you who you are
Yes, where it is? Oh! Soft sell magazines, a stereo set, stack of DVDs and a cable TV walker. From this it can be clearly seen that the owner of the chair and table is not in any way interested in studying. Otherwise, the table would contain books.

In conclusion, these are axioms and not iron clad rules. These axioms aim to extol the virtue of studying.
