The study journey
The Study Journey
A
journey has the definite characteristic of changing the location of anything
that embarks on it. The study journey is the series of steps, actions and
activities that together make for confident conclusion that the goal to study
has been accomplished. The study journey is not an easy one; it is filled with
daring obstacles and problematic parts. But unlike a perilous journey, the
study journey does not risk the life of anyone. The study journey is more like
a mental surfing through several mazes to find an outlet that brings relief and
confidence. The study journey is a unique and important one that yields fruits
like competence, knowledge, information, literacy and many others like these.
The
journey begins within; a need to know, a fact-finding desire or the need to be
prepared for an examination. The study journey always begins from within. While
going about other activities, there will be the subconscious desire to study.
The strength of this inner desire to study determines if any serious progress
would be made on the study journey. A very strong desire has an immeasurable
potency to carry the bearer through to the ultimate goal of the study journey.
There
will then be the conversion of inner desire to study into efforts to bring the
goal of the desire to reality. Many things will be done at this stage of the
journey; visits to the library, browsing the internet., ordering for specific
newspapers, journals or magazines, traveling and even regularly attending
classes. Serious efforts would have to be made to move ahead in the study
journey as lots of obstacles such as insufficient funds and a busy daily
schedule would be faced. Once all necessary efforts have been made, progress on
the study journey would be substantial.
The
gathering of necessary tools, aids and materials is the natural result of
efforts made; a lot of books from the library, tapes and videos from archives,
recording and analyzing gadgets and the list can go on without end. The study
journey at this stage brings a tangible convergence of physical objects that
would be used to forge ahead towards the actual goal. The gathering stage of
the study journey could lead to the accumulation of several materials enough to
create a personal library, treasure and legacy.
Planning
and scheduling is a part of the study journey that concerns itself with how to
sort through all that has been gathered. Without a plan, the materials, aids
and tools gathered would lie fallow. This is the simplest part of the study
journey. The only thing needed to complete this part of the journey is a
thorough and truthful assessment of availability. A total mess and
disorderliness could be created with all that has been gathered if planning and
scheduling is not done properly. The best example of a schedule that comes to
mind is the Time-table.
The
actual act of studying is the next stage in the study journey. Based on the
schedules time set aside, studying helps to mentally devour the contents of
what has been gathered. This is the most difficult stage of the study journey and
involves lots of discipline. Studying can be done in various ways based on what
suits best. The previous stages of the journey are useless to the study journey
if this stage is not judiciously carried out. This stage is so important
because it leads to the creation of a mental data storage warehouse.
Revision
helps to burn all information stored in the mental data storage house into
memory. It ensures that all stored information can be retrieved at any time
without recourse to the materials, aids and tools gathered. At this stage of
the study journey, most of the goals of the journey have been achieved.
Gauging
is the final lap of the study journey. It is a critical and important stage. It
aims to see how much of the goals set at the beginning of the study journey has
been achieved. It is an unbiased appraisal of the study process. A less than
impressive score means a revisit of the previous stages in the journey is
imperative. This stage must be done properly in order to ensure that the study
journey does not become an exercise in futility.
